Happy Hour at Limon

Happy Hour 5-7pm, all night Wednesdays.
$5 Cebiches and Mixturas, $3 Drafts, $4 Mojitos or Margaritas, $5 Wine

This was my first experience with Limon and first time eating Peruvian food. I have to say this place was really nice, very upscale vibe. I love trying new types of food and culture so this was a treat for me. There were not very many people in the restaurant, but I'm guessing it's usually a lot busier. The service was great, being my first time trying Peruvian food I had a lot of questions and the server was very friendly and helpful.

Drinks
Great selection of drinks for happy hour. I think they had 4 beers on draft - all excellent beers! I got a Deschutes Amber that was very tasty. My friend ordered a Mojito, which she seemed to really enjoy. They have a large wine list and if wine is your thing you should go on a Monday when all bottles are 50% off.

Food
I wasn't really sure what I was exactly ordering, but I was feeling adventurous. We split two items off the happy hour menu: Atun tartar y Tabule de cereals andinos (Ahi tuna tar-tar, Andean grain salad with avocado mousse, plantain chips) and Yucca and Plantain chips with Limon salsa. The Tuna Tar-Tar was different than anything I've ever eaten before. It was a mound of packed grains with sushi-grade tuna and a creamy sauce on top. It was delicious and the presentation was beautiful! The Yucca and Plantain chips would be the equivalent to chips and salsa, but very different. The salsa was chunky, not really a sauce at all, but more of a solid. You get two types of chips (Yucca and plantain), both very tasteful and unique.

I would definitely recommend Limon's Happy Hour when you're feeling adventurous and up for something a little different. My guess is you will love it and be back again.

10 Cent Wings at Maloney's

*Update: Maloney's no longer serves 10 cent wings during happy hour, now they offer 1/2 priced drinks and apps.

Yes, you read that right! Maloney's actually has 10 cent wings during their happy hour from 4 - 7pm Monday through Friday. They also offer $1 off all drinks. I think it is safe to say that this is by far the best deal you can find on wings in Denver.

If you have not yet been to Maloney's, I would definitely recommend it. The food there is pretty decent, reasonable priced, and they have a really great selection of beer on tap, which I love. You can get a beer in a pint, or opt for the giant mug of beer... I usually opt for giant size. The restaurant / bar is split up into two rooms, one with a huge bar, booths and some community seating. The other room has a small bar, pool tables, and few high top tables. If nothing else, this is a great place to stop in for a drink.

Now back to the wings... When it comes to wings, I like a challenge, so I ordered 25. They brought them out piled high in a bucket, which was pretty cool. The wings were saucy, meaty and hot... not super hot, but just right. They do a great wing for sure! At ten cents a pop one might think these might be those skimpy wings we've all seen before, but that was not the case at all as I had to take 7 home with me. They're served with ranch and this other wasabi-type dipping sauce, I stuck with the ranch. Unfortunately, no carrots or celery to garnish, but I guess you can't expect much of the extras for the price point.

Mel's $6 Lunch Special

Monday—Pan Roasted Salmon Cakes
Tuesday—Cobb Salad or House-Made Reuben Sandwich
Wednesday—Grilled Angus Burger
Thursday—Mel’s Grilled Salmon
Friday—Beer-Battered Fish and Chips
Saturday—Achiote Braised Kurobuta Pork Tacos

This was my first time visiting Mel's. I have to admit, at first glance when I walked in I was a bit unsure. The Lunch crowd was a bit older than I had expected and the decor matched it's patrons. I opted to sit at the empty bar. I ordered Friday's special - The Fish and Chips, along with a glass of water. Interesting side note, they give you filtered bottled water and you can get sparkling water for free - you just have to ask for it.

The wait for the food seemed a bit long, but I guess the slower service may be more fitting for the clientele. The food was definitely worth the wait. I received a generous potion of crispy fish and seasoned fries. It was really good, not at all soggy on the outside or mushy on the inside. Cooked and seasoned perfectly! The fries were pretty darn good themselves.

The service was very friendly. The chef even came out and my friend asked him about a soup he had made a year ago. Even though they no longer offered that soup, he remembered every detail about it and offered to supply a hard to find ingredient on his next shipment.

I am excited to go back and try some of their other lunch specials. They also have a $5 Happy Hour food menu from 4 - 6:30 pm daily. If it's as good as their lunch then it's probably worth checking out. For more info on Mel's click here.
